13th September 2010 - Awards for Bridging Cultures (ABCs) 

The Awards for Bridging Cultures (ABCs) was created to promote the work of the many organisations across the UK that promote intercultural dialogue. Funded by the Baring Foundation, the awards scheme gives cash prizes for projects that successfully build trust and respect between people from different cultures.

15th September 2010 - The Sportlot Community Chest  

The main purpose of the scheme is to support good projects which will create new or improved sport and physical activity opportunities. The scheme is intended to support activities which:

• Encourage more people to become more physically active more often

• Encourage volunteers and community champions by developing new sport and physical activity leaders, sports coaches and officials

 The scheme is open to any group that wishes to organise activities aimed at getting more people, more active, more often. This could mean new activities or raising the standard of existing activities. Organisations can apply, provided they have a bank or building society account in the name of the organisation.

 The maximum grant is £1,000 in any 12 month period.

17th September 2010 - Comic Relief UK - Cycle 4 now open to applications 

Comic Relief's UK Grant Programme aims to bring about positive and lasting change in the lives of poor and disadvantaged people in the UK by investing in work that addresses people's immediate needs, as well as tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice.

Registered charities and voluntary organisations (including social enterprises and community interest companies) in the UK are invited to apply for grants of between £25,000 and £40,000.

Grants are available to cover running or capital costs of organisations or projects under the following programmes:

  • Mental Health.
  • Domestic and Sexual Abuse.
  • Refugee and Asylum Seeking Women.
  • Sexually Exploited and Trafficked Young People.
  • Young People and Alcohol.
  • Young People with Mental Health Problems.
  • Local Communities.

22nd September 2010 – Community Wildlife, Big Lottery Fund

Community Wildlife will fund projects that bring local people together to discover, enjoy or protect the wildlife in their local area.  BIG have teamed up with the BBC Wildlife Fund’s Go Wild campaign to bring you the Community Wildlife programme.

This new programme will fund projects that bring local people together to discover, enjoy or protect the wildlife in their local area.  The programme will fund between £300 and £10,000 for projects that:

  • improve rural or urban environments for people to enjoy, for example by
  1. protecting wildlife habitats
  2. creating a nature trail, woodland walk or wildlife garden for people to enjoy
  3. improving natural community spaces, such as rivers, ponds and woodlands.
  • get people more active and healthier, for example by:
  1. exploring parks, rivers and the countryside to look for rare or endangered species
  2. encouraging people to take up gardening or go on nature walks
  3. providing opportunities for children to learn about nature through play.

28th September 2010 = Joseph Rowntree Foundation - new calls for proposals
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has announced two new calls for proposals.

Just adaptation responses to climate change in the UK
This call is part of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s Climate Change and Social Justice Programme. The aim of the programme is to support the development of socially just responses to climate change in the UK. The aim of this call is to fund a single project which will help to inform local adaptation responses to climate change in the UK. The project is intended to support local practitioners to take account of social justice issues and to develop decision making tools to assist in the key trade-offs that may need to be made in prioritising objectives. JRF expects this call to be of interest to environmental and social policy researchers and collaborative bids which combine expertise across these fields are welcomed. The deadline for receipt of e-mail and hard copies of full proposals is 28 September 2010 (2pm). Full details on this Call, including terms and conditions, are available here.

A socially just transition to a low carbon economy and society
This call is part of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s Climate Change and Social Justice Programme. The aim of the programme is to support the development of socially just responses to climate change in the UK. This call for proposals is seeking short papers (thinkpieces) which address the question: How can we achieve a socially just transition to a low carbon economy and society? JRF anticipates funding up to six papers covering different approaches to this topic from the more general to more specific. Projects will be expected to begin in 2011 and to be conducted over a period of up to six months. The deadline for receipt of e-mail outline proposals is 28 September 2010 (2pm). 30th September 2010 - Help the Homeless (UK)
Help the Homeless, a national charity which aims to help homeless people throughout the United Kingdom to resume a normal life, is currently accepting applications from small and medium sized charities and voluntary organisations. Grants of up to £3,000 are available towards capital costs to support projects that assist disadvantaged individuals in their return to mainstream society, through residential or training facilities. There are four application deadlines a year. The next application deadline is the 30 September 2010. More information

1st October 2010 - Life Skills Project
A £4.3 million funding package to help people aged over 50 in Wales return to training and work has been announced as new figures reveal that more older workers are suffering long term unemployment. The £4.3 million from the Big Lottery Fund will be awarded through the £14 million Life Skills project - a funding stream, which matches the Lottery money with support from the European Social Fund through the Welsh Assembly Government. Until 16 September 2010 groups in Wales that help people aged over 50 who face multiple barriers improve their Life Skills and increase their confidence by re-engaging them in education, learning, volunteering and employment, can bid for a share of £4.3 million. Applications for the rest of the money, nearly £1 million, can be made between 25 August and 1 October. 15th October 2010 - BBC Children in Need Grants Scheme (UK)
BBC Children in Need are inviting not-for-profit organisations (including registered charities, voluntary organisations, schools, local authorities, churches, social enterprises, community interest groups, universities etc) working with disadvantaged children and young people 18 years and under, living in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, to apply for grants of up to £10,000 through their grants schemes. BBC Children in Need run two grant schemes. Small Grants of £10,000 or less per year for up to three years and Main Grants over £10,000 per year for up to three years. BBC Children in Need can only fund projects that focus on the differences made (outcomes) to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. Grants can be used to cover both capital and revenue costs. The next deadline is 15 October 2010. More information

28th January 2011 - Volant Charitable Trust
The Volant Charitable Trust was set up by the author JK Rowling to support charitable causes in the UK. The Trust has two broad areas of funding: research into the causes, treatment and possible cures of Multiple Sclerosis. Support for charitable organisations whose purpose is to alleviate poverty and social deprivation, with a particular emphasis on children's and women’s issues. Although no minimum or maximum amount is specified in the guidelines, the Trustees are prepared to support a charity by way of regular annual payments. Such payments are expected to cover project associated costs and will only, in exceptional circumstances, exceed three years. Applications are accepted from registered charities in the UK. Applications may be submitted at any time and the Trustees meet in March and September each year to assess applications. The deadline for consideration at the March 2011 meeting is 28 January 2011.
